About Ferrylane
Ferrylane is an independent reference archive dedicated to the medieval fortified heritage of Romania. The content here draws from published historical scholarship, field documentation, and primary source materials held at Romanian national archives and the institutions listed below.
What This Site Covers
The medieval defensive landscape of Romania spans several distinct architectural traditions: the Saxon ring-walled fortified churches of southern Transylvania, the Hungarian-influenced Gothic tower fortresses of the interior, the Moldavian frontier citadels of the eastern Carpathians, and the Wallachian strongholds commanding the southern passes. Each of these groups carries its own construction logic, material vocabulary, and historiographic tradition.
Ferrylane documents specific sites in depth — their building sequence, the political circumstances that shaped each phase of construction, the restoration work currently underway, and the scholarly debates that remain open.
Editorial Approach
Articles here are written in a descriptive, neutral register. The site does not advocate for any particular restoration methodology or political position regarding ownership disputes — several Romanian fortresses are the subject of active legal or national heritage claims, and the coverage here reflects the documented record rather than editorial preference.
Text is updated when new information becomes available through published research or official heritage body announcements. The update date on each article reflects the most recent substantive revision.
